Read moreMany people come into the experience of psychedelics with the expectation that these substances will completely dissolve the ego, leading them to a state of oneness where the sense of self disappears forever. However, through my personal journey and work with psychedelics, I’ve found that the ego isn’t destroyed but rather temporarily altered or softened during deeper experiences. This transient state of ego dissolution allows for profound feelings of connection and unity with the world around us. It’s essential to understand that the ego itself isn’t inherently negative—it is a fundamental part of our identity and helps provide structure and direction in life. The ego acts as a protective mechanism, shaped by our experiences and sometimes by past trauma, which can cause it to become inflated or defensive. Psychedelics can help by bringing awareness to these patterns, enabling us to work on healing and integrating rather than trying to obliterate the ego. When used properly and with clear intention, psychedelics support increased self-awareness and emotional healing by reinforcing a healthier, balanced ego. This approach contrasts with improper or casual use, which may lead to negative experiences or ego inflation instead. Reflecting on questions like "Is my ego healthy or inflated?" helps guide the integration process. In my experience, the key lies not in annihilating the ego but in transforming and understanding its role within oneself. Psychedelic experiences open a door to deep introspection and clarity, encouraging us to nurture a stronger, more compassionate self rather than viewing the ego as an adversary. This mindset supports ongoing personal growth and spiritual development beyond the psychedelic session itself.
