Speed dating - ID search version

After securing our home, we went ahead to meet IDs earlier to get some ideas. Our house would only be available near end Q1 2026, and we started our ID hunt 7 months early! We met a total of 12 IDs, most of which we went for a second meet for quotation.

We started off attending ID events through Qanvast Hangout and Home by Hitcheed as we initially wanted to engage contractors/main con but wanted ideas from IDs to cut costs. However after meeting IDs and comparing quotations, we decided that the costs saved from engaging independent contractors (but having to liaise and do PM and design ourselves) was not worth it as we don’t have time to spare with our full time jobs. Furthermore, main contractors are getting more expensive and some even quoting ID prices. Thus we ultimately decided on engaging and ID!

Meeting IDs at events really felt like speed dating, you only have 45 mins to discuss your ideas before the beeper beeps and you’re on to the next.

🌟 One tip if it’s your first time meeting IDs, try to place the ID you like best as the 3/4 one you meet! Because by then you would have a better idea on things you want, and you would already know what to expect from ID meets, hence you’re able to have a more productive discussion!

For events like these, most firms send their newbie IDs instead of the seniors with experience. Or they may pair a newbie with a senior and meeting good quality IDs at the fairs are really luck based. If you have specific IDs you like, it’s better to reach out to them directly instead of events!

In total we met 11 IDs from events, and 1 from recommendation through social media. After a gruelling 4 months, we finally ended our ID search. Guess which ID we ultimately decided on!

If you want to know the name of the ID and firm, feel free to drop DM or comment! ☺️

... Read moreStarting an interior designer (ID) search can feel overwhelming, especially when juggling a full-time job and the pressure of a major home renovation. From personal experience, attending events like Qanvast Hangout and Home by Hitcheed was invaluable for getting a broad spectrum of ideas and understanding the current market pricing. However, these "speed dating" style events—where you get only about 45 minutes per designer—can sometimes limit the depth of conversation. One thing I learned is to approach these meetings with clear priorities and a prepared list of non-negotiables, such as fast response time, good communication, and a willingness to consider your budget and preferences. It’s also crucial to recognize that many event-attending IDs might be less experienced or paired with seniors, so the quality of interaction can vary widely. During our hunt, we noted that communication and rapport were just as important as design skills. Some IDs were eager but inexperienced, others were pushy or sales-focused, and a few really took the time to understand our needs and offered insightful suggestions. For example, one senior ID advised us to reduce unnecessary permanent fixtures since it was our first home, helping us avoid overspending on features we might later want to change. Another important lesson was about quotations and transparency. Several designers gave expensive or unclear quotes, while others offered more wallet-friendly payment terms and competitive pricing without compromising on quality materials. We particularly valued those who showed us past projects or allowed visits to previous clients’ homes to verify workmanship firsthand. If you’re embarking on your own ID search, consider these practical tips: - Arrange your meetings so you meet your preferred designers mid-way (3rd or 4th), after gaining some experience from earlier discussions. - Don’t hesitate to reach out to recommended or highly rated IDs directly rather than relying solely on event encounters. - Prioritize designers who listen attentively, respect your boundaries, and provide realistic alternatives. - Factor in the overall project management support, as handling contractors yourself might not be feasible if you have a busy schedule. Ultimately, the best ID for your project is one who balances creativity, practical advice, affordability, and good rapport. The journey might be long and demanding, but finding the right partner makes a huge difference in transforming your home renovation dream into reality.
