Designing a multi-functional building like the Joel Santos Rancho presents unique challenges and opportunities. From my experience working with similar projects, incorporating clear zoning for administrative offices, engineering, accounting, and sales areas greatly enhances operational efficiency. For this building, attention to vertical circulation with elevators ensures accessibility across all levels, including the second floor, which is strategically utilized for offices and waiting areas. It’s crucial to design circulation spaces such as corridors and waiting rooms comfortable enough to handle daily traffic while maintaining an inviting atmosphere. Including women's and men's restrooms at convenient locations significantly improves comfort for occupants and visitors alike. The patio areas serve as excellent natural light sources and relaxation spots, which are essential in office environments to encourage breaks and informal meetings. Another key aspect is the integration of archives and file storage close to the reception and administrative areas, facilitating document management and quick access. Using elevation markers like NPT+4.5 helps maintain consistent floor heights and coordinates mechanical systems such as HVAC and elevators, which is vital for ensuring functionality and compliance with safety codes. Learning from my own projects, balancing aesthetic appeal with practical office needs requires close collaboration with engineers and clients, to incorporate feedback on space usage and workflow, ultimately creating a building that supports productivity and offers a welcoming environment.
