For nature lovers, Lucayan National Park is a must-visit. Besides Gold Rock Beach, it’s home to one of the world's longest underwater cave systems. You can explore the accessible caves (don't worry, they're dry!) and walk the boardwalks through lush mangrove forests. It offers a completely different side of the island compared to the resorts, and it’s a wonderful way to connect with the natural beauty of Grand Bahama. If you’re looking for something a bit unique, consider a fishing excursion or even a dolphin encounter. There are several reputable operators that offer responsible interactions. I also heard great things about exploring the less-traveled parts of the island by renting a scooter or car – it allows for spontaneous stops at local eateries and hidden coves that aren’t in the main tourist brochures. To make your trip even smoother, here are a few tips: Getting Around: Taxis are readily available, but for more flexibility, consider renting a car for a day or two, especially if you want to explore beyond Freeport. Best Time to Visit: The weather is generally beautiful year-round, but November to May offers slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity. What to Pack: Definitely swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent (especially for evenings), and comfortable walking shoes. Local Currency: Bahamian Dollar is pegged to the US Dollar, and US Dollars are widely accepted. Freeport truly offers a fantastic blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion.
