Supporting plants properly is essential for healthy growth and maximizing your garden's yield. For climbing plants such as climbing roses, sweet peas, and morning glories, obelisks or tripods are ideal. These structures give the vines a place to grow upwards, improving air circulation and sunlight exposure. I usually install these early in the season to train the plants properly. Horizontal netting or grid supports work well for flowers like dahlias, zinnias, and gladiolus. This type of support distributes the weight of the blooms and keeps plants from flopping over, especially in windy conditions. I recommend matching each type of support to your specific crops to avoid wasted stems and ensure healthy plant development. Proper supports not only promote better growth but also make garden maintenance much easier and more enjoyable.
