gender identity is strange

I’ve labeled myself as nonbinary since 2021 at age 16. I primarily identified as feminine for the most part (they/them pronouns) but knew that I didn’t relate to the experience of being a woman. I always felt sort of different, almost neutral to the idea of gender because of certain ways I grew up. However I had continued to present femininely until September 2024 when I began to experiment with my hair and finally began seeing myself in a masculine light.

I’m still into feminine things like pink and hello kitty and stuffed animals but I feel in my heart like the way I experience these things is as a boy. And that’s okay. I want to be viewed as a feminine guy (he/they), or even a neutral-guy but I don’t know to what extent yet. However, I still have all the time in the world to figure it out!

It’s important to remember gender is fluid and constantly changing because we are human and that’s what things do. 🏳️‍⚧️

... Read moreMy own journey with gender identity has been a truly personal and ever-evolving adventure, and I found so much comfort in sharing it. For anyone out there exploring their path, know that you're not alone! It's completely normal for your understanding of yourself to shift and grow over time. When I first started thinking about what gender meant to me, it felt a little overwhelming, especially trying to understand terms like nonbinary and how that fit into my world. Initially, I gravitated towards a feminine presentation, even though my internal sense of self didn't align with being a woman. This is where the idea of being 'feminine presenting nonbinary' really resonated with me for a while. It's a beautiful thing to express yourself in ways that feel authentic, regardless of the labels others might expect. I know some of my nonbinary friends, who were socialized as 'nonbinary girls,' also navigate this intersection of identity and presentation, finding their own unique blend. Over time, as I continued my exploration, I realized that my gender expression could evolve even further. There's so much freedom in allowing yourself to experiment, whether it's with your style, your hair, or even your pronouns. I've personally found peace in trying out different expressions, moving towards a more masculine presentation, and embracing a trans/transmasc identity, while still holding onto aspects I love, like having a 'femme day' occasionally. It's all part of the unique tapestry of who you are! Sometimes, when people start looking into gender identity, questions about medical aspects like a 'transgender HRT timeline' or specific resources come up. It's important to remember that every person's journey is unique. For some, medical transition, including hormone therapy, is a vital part of aligning their physical self with their gender identity. For others, like me, the journey might focus more on social transition – changing presentation, pronouns (like experimenting with she/they pronouns to they/them pronouns), and how you see yourself. There's no single right way to be transgender or nonbinary, and your path is valid whatever it looks like. Navigating societal expectations can be challenging, but finding supportive communities and reliable resources can be incredibly helpful during this time of self-discovery. Whether you're looking for information, personal stories, or just a safe space to share your feelings, there are many avenues available. Remember, gender is fluid, and it's okay for your identity to change and grow. Embrace the process of learning about yourself. It's about finding what brings you comfort and joy in your own skin, and allowing yourself the space and time to figure it all out, at your own pace. Your journey is yours alone, and it's powerful in its authenticity.
