New Opossums in the Crew!

We have new team members in the crew.
This is opossum number 2 with what I am assuming is her baby. Harold was not present at this feeding. I have no idea of what the family dynamics are or if Harold is the husband/dad. But Opossum number 2 has never been this bold before. And this is the first sighting of the little one. But it is now confirmed that there are at least 3 opossums in the mix.
My recent sighting of that mama opossum and her adorable baby has truly sparked my curiosity about these amazing marsupials! Watching the larger opossum confidently navigate our concrete path, with the smaller opossum partially hidden behind her amongst the leaves and bushes, was such a special moment, especially under the shroud of night. It made me realize how little I truly knew about opossum moms and their incredible parenting journey. Did you know that opossums are North America's only marsupial? This means that, just like kangaroos, their babies are born underdeveloped and then crawl into a pouch – or, for opossums, a specialized abdominal fold – to continue their development. When I saw the two opossums together, it wasn't just a fleeting glance; it was a real-life lesson in wildlife care. A mama opossum can have a surprisingly large litter, sometimes up to 13 or more babies! Imagine trying to keep track of all those little ones! After they outgrow the pouch, these tiny youngsters often cling to their mother's back, riding along as she forages. This image of a 'possum train' is just the cutest thing and perfectly explains what I might have witnessed – a protective mother guiding her offspring. My sighting, occurring at night, perfectly aligns with their nocturnal nature. They're usually out and about when we humans are tucked in bed, which makes catching a glimpse even more thrilling. If you're hoping to observe them, setting up a motion-activated camera can be a fantastic way to peek into their secret world without disturbing them. Opossum mothers are incredibly dedicated. They teach their young how to find food, avoid predators, and navigate their environment. Their diet is incredibly varied; they're omnivores who'll eat almost anything from fruits and insects to carrion and even ticks! This makes them fantastic natural pest controllers in our backyards. While they might look a bit intimidating to some, they're generally shy and non-aggressive. And a fun fact about them: they have a natural immunity to many snake venoms and are highly resistant to rabies, which is often a common misconception. This makes them much safer neighbors than some people realize. The bond between a mama opossum and her babies is truly fascinating. They stay together for a few months until the young are ready to strike out on their own, usually around three to four months old. This period is crucial for their survival skills, as the mother equips them with everything they need to become independent. Seeing that larger opossum with her smaller companion made me appreciate the hidden lives happening right outside my door. It’s a reminder that every creature, no matter how common, has a unique and complex story, especially the dedicated possum moms working hard to raise their families and contribute to our local ecosystem.
