10K Long Run
Long run Saturday
Yesterday was my favorite kind of Saturday – a long run day! There’s something incredibly satisfying about hitting those double-digit kilometers and knowing you’re building strength and endurance. For anyone looking to tackle their first 10K or improve their long-distance running, I wanted to share a few insights from my own training journey. One of the biggest questions I get is about training plans. Honestly, consistency is key! A good 10K training plan usually involves 3-4 runs a week, gradually increasing your mileage. For beginners, it's all about going from a 5K to a 10K plan, focusing on building a solid base. Don't jump into too much too soon! Start with a comfortable pace, and don't be afraid to take walk breaks if you need them. The goal is to finish stronger, not faster, in the beginning. Monitoring your performance is super helpful. I always keep an eye on my Splits and my AVG.PACE. For instance, looking back at my run, I had varied paces like 9:51 /mi, 9:47 /mi, and even a faster 9:21/mi. This isn't about being perfectly even; it's about understanding how your body feels at different points and practicing pacing. Sometimes, I'll purposely try to maintain a slightly faster pace for a mile or two, then ease back into my comfortable long-run pace. It’s a great way to increase your threshold limit over time. For long distance running tips, hydration and nutrition are non-negotiable. I make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day leading up to my long run and carry electrolytes with me. Fueling with complex carbs the day before also makes a huge difference. During the run itself, listen to your body. If you feel tired, slow down. If you feel strong, maintain your effort. It’s not a race, it’s a journey to build stamina. If you're wondering how to get better at long distance running or aiming for a specific goal like a 10K sub 50, incorporating some speed work or tempo runs into your weekly routine can be beneficial. These aren't long, but they challenge your body to run faster for shorter periods, improving your overall pace. And don't forget recovery! Stretching, foam rolling, and adequate sleep are just as important as the miles you log. Every long run, like today's 10K, is a step closer to achieving those bigger running goals, whether it’s a half marathon or just enjoying the process!
