entry 04. Hanoi, Vietnam 🇻🇳

I recently took a trip to Vietnam, and let’s just say it’s been transformational to say the least. It wasn’t directly due to the place itself, but more of what I learned about myself while in this beautiful part of Vietnam. I might talk about my personal experience in a different post.

For travelers looking on what to do:

• Local attractions referenced:

Temple Of Literature - Out of the few temples I’ve seen in Asia, this is by far my favorite. Built in 1076, it’s dedicated to Confucius. It’s actually Vietnam’s first national university. cost: 70.000vnd

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology - If you’re into learning about anthropology or cultures, this museum gives you a look into the many ethnic groups of Vietnam and their influences. cost: 40.000vnd

Local food referenced:

Bo Béo - I’m a huge foodie, so I like to go for authentic food. I ordered beef pho from this local shop. IMO, I expected it to be more brothy. It might just be this one shop, it was still good tho.

Bubbles - I LOVE VIETNAM’S COFFEE CULTURE. CHEF’S KISS BC THEY DON’T MISS. You know that question, “If you had to eat the same meal everyday, what would it be?” I never had an answer until now. Bánh mì and Vietnamese coffee =🥰🙂‍↕️ This cafe has a cute little dog that keeps running around too.

Hidden Gem referenced:

Hien Minh Tea House - I was on the way to a film store to make sure my film was loaded properly, and I stumbled upon this cute teahouse. I hadn’t planned on having tea and I thought I had been spending a lot already, but once they invited me in to just take a look around I couldn’t help but stay for a bit. I’m a slow traveler and this was my favorite hidden gem that I’ve found. I truly felt that I had been having tea with Uncle Iroh🍵🐉

... Read moreMy journey through Hanoi was nothing short of incredible, and I'm so excited to share more practical tips and insights I gathered. Beyond the main sights, Hanoi truly comes alive with its unique atmosphere, and capturing that essence, especially through photos, is a must for any traveler. When it comes to photography, the vibrant street scene of Hanoi is a dream! I loved wandering through the Old Quarter, where every corner offers a new perspective. The narrow lanes, bustling motorbikes, and historic buildings adorned with colorful signs create a visual feast. Early mornings, as the city slowly wakes up, or late afternoons, when the light softens, are perfect for capturing authentic moments. Don't be shy to step into a local market; the energy and colors are fantastic photo opportunities. For iconic shots, definitely head to Hoan Kiem Lake, especially around sunset, where you can often see locals practicing tai chi or just enjoying the evening breeze. Speaking of things to do in Hanoi, while the Temple of Literature is a masterpiece of ancient Vietnamese architecture and history as the country's first national university, spending a bit more time there allows you to truly appreciate its serene courtyards and the intricate details of its stelae. I found it fascinating to imagine students walking these grounds centuries ago. And if you're keen on diving deeper into Vietnam's rich cultural tapestry, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is an absolute must-visit. It's not just about artifacts; it offers a comprehensive look at the diverse ethnic groups, complete with traditional houses and interactive exhibits. I spent hours there and left with a much deeper understanding of the country's heritage. Now, let's talk food! Beyond the incredible beef pho I tried (and became obsessed with), Hanoi's culinary scene is vast. You can't leave without trying Bún chả – grilled pork with vermicelli noodles – a true Hanoi specialty. And for a street food adventure, keep an eye out for Bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls) or Xôi xéo (sticky rice with savory toppings). My love for Vietnamese coffee also grew immensely. Whether it's the strong, sweet phin coffee or the creamy egg coffee, it’s an experience in itself. Many cafes, like the one where I enjoyed my Bánh mì and Vietnamese coffee, have charming decor and a relaxed vibe perfect for people-watching. Don't be afraid to try small, unassuming local eateries; often, those are where you find the most authentic and delicious dishes. And for those seeking a tranquil escape, much like my experience at the Hien Minh Tea House, Hanoi has several hidden gems. These quiet havens offer a stark contrast to the city's energetic pace. Look for small, tucked-away cafes or traditional teahouses in less touristy areas. They often reflect a slow, intentional way of life that lets you truly connect with the local culture. Exploring off the beaten path is how you find these unique spots, transforming a simple visit into a truly personal and memorable adventure in Hanoi, Vietnam.
