Target’s New Self-CheckOut Policy starting 3/17/24
Starting March 17th, 2024 Target will be implementing a new policy for their self-checkout lanes that will only allow customers who have 10 items or less to use them. Walmart is implementing a similar policy as well.
I personally don’t believe this will last long as many customers, including myself, prefer the self-checkout lanes versus waiting for a traditional human-ran checkout! I feel as though the traditional checkout lanes to be much slower than the self-checkout lanes even if each customer has a cart full of items!
I’m assuming the change is to speed up the self-checkout lanes, reduce the long lines waiting for said lanes, and focus on hiring more employees to run the traditional lanes. (Edit: apparently the change in policy is a direct reflection of increase theft rates).

I've found those super convenient for larger orders, especially when I know I have a full cart and don't want to deal with the potential wait at a manned lane. It's a great way to bypass the whole 'checkout area' experience if you're pressed for time or simply prefer not to scan everything yourself. Another thing I've noticed is how this changes the overall flow of the store. Before, you’d see a mix of short lines at self-checkout and longer ones at traditional registers.
