... Read moreIt's a question we all ponder at some point: 'what makes people mad?' For years, I struggled with a short fuse, feeling easily provoked by everyday annoyances and perceived slights. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when things don't go your way, or when someone acts in a way that just grates on your nerves. Whether it’s a rude comment, a broken promise from a friend, or even just traffic, the triggers for anger are everywhere, and they used to get the best of me. I remember countless times feeling my blood boil over trivial matters, only to regret my reactions later. It was exhausting, and frankly, it took a toll on my peace of mind. I realized I needed a better way to navigate these situations, to truly be slow to anger. This wasn't about suppressing feelings, but about understanding them and choosing my response. My journey really began when I started to consciously observe behavior – not just the behavior of others, but my own reactions too. Instead of immediately getting defensive or upset, I'd pause. I learned to ask myself: 'What's really going on here?' Often, what appears to be a direct attack might just be someone having a bad day, or operating from a place of their own stress. Understanding the other person's personality and potential motivations, even if just a guess, helped immensely. It allows me to depersonalize the situation. This understanding then informs the 'making adjustments accordingly' part of my strategy. Sometimes, the adjustment is simply to walk away from a heated conversation, or to consciously decide that a particular person’s actions don't deserve my emotional energy. Other times, it's about calmly communicating my boundaries. It's about choosing to respond thoughtfully, rather than react impulsively. This doesn't mean I ignore disrespectful actions, far from it. In fact, one of the most powerful lessons I've learned is the importance of not holding space for people who insist upon 'playing in your face,' as I like to put it. This isn't about being confrontational; it's about self-preservation. It means recognizing when someone is consistently disrespectful or draining, and making the conscious choice to limit their access to your time and emotional energy. It’s a form of self-respect that allows you to maintain your inner calm, even when external circumstances are challenging. By applying these principles, I've found a greater sense of peace and control over my emotions, transforming how I react to situations that once would have undoubtedly made me mad.
