Neutral Isn’t Always Optimal

Neutral spine isn’t just about where you start. It’s about where fatigue takes you.

It’s more than just finding alignment, It’s about maintaining it as fatigue sets in.

In plank, I often cue a slightly elevated hip position so the hips align more closely with the shoulders rather than sitting lower in a traditional neutral setup.

Why?

Because movement changes under fatigue.

Starting slightly above neutral creates space for natural fatigue to settle into alignment, rather than drifting past neutral into excessive lumbar extension.

It’s not about changing the standard.

It’s about coaching ahead of what the body will naturally do over time.

This approach helps maintain:

- better load distribution

- sustained core engagement

- clearer spinal support throughout the exercise

Same plank. Different coaching strategy.

This reel is Part 3 of a 5-part breakdown.

The full YouTube video dives deeper into how and when to apply these coaching decisions.

... Read moreFrom my experience as a fitness enthusiast, I’ve noticed that strictly adhering to a 'neutral spine' during planks isn’t always the most effective approach—especially as fatigue begins to set in. Initially, it might feel natural to aim for what’s traditionally called a neutral spine, but as muscles tire, our bodies tend to drift into less optimal positions, like excessive lumbar extension, which can put undue stress on the lower back. I started experimenting with cueing a slightly elevated hip position—raising the hips just a bit so they’re more in line with the shoulders rather than sagging below neutral. This small adjustment creates a buffer zone, allowing the spine to stay better aligned even as I fatigue, which helps distribute load more evenly across my muscles and maintains core activation longer. What’s fascinating is how this coaching tweak doesn’t contradict standard posture principles; instead, it anticipates the natural course of movement changes with fatigue. By embracing this proactive strategy, I’ve felt less lower back strain and noticed improved endurance during planks. This approach also encourages clearer spinal support throughout the exercise, which is essential for injury prevention and form consistency. If you’re coaching or practicing Pilates or reformer workouts, consider how these subtle positioning shifts can make a big difference. Remember, quality movement isn’t just about where you start but how well you maintain form as fatigue builds. This mindset has truly transformed my approach to core training and helped sustain long-term development without sacrificing safety or effectiveness. Ultimately, investing in deeper education about movement patterns shapes not only your practice but also the culture of your training space—choosing precision and thoughtful coaching strategies fosters healthier, more resilient bodies.
