💭 Omg I loved this book BUT I was not prepared for the emotional damage this book brought upon my heart! Seriously this book just starts off ripping your heart out. You think oh, it will get better. It’s just setting the stage. HA! No my friends, the book then starts a grocery list of heartbreak trauma. If I wasn’t crying, or teary, I had my hand over my mouth in a omg moments. The story continues this way until the end. It’s so good, but it also was so heart wrenching to read! I have never wanted to crawl into a book, and save a MMC so badly. I’m not just saying as a child either. I’m talking about as a grown man! I wanted to just say nope! I’m done, and you’ve been through enough. That really says something. The book follows the MMC Max throughout his life, and his life is rough. So make sure to check those TWs. There is romance, and it is angsty. The entire book is in the MMC POV. The book has spicy scenes but they aren’t fade to black, but they aren’t descriptive either. The book IMO is cleaner than even some YA books I’ve read TBH. The book easily kept my attention. I didn’t want to put it down, but real life responsibilities called. This may be the most emotional book I’ve read all year. So if you’re someone who loves books that are angsty romances, with an MMC whose life just keeps putting him through hell then you will love this one. I know I did 😅

💬 This contemporary romance is book 1 in The Lighthouse Duology. This book does have some darker themes and scenes that will be triggering to some. Make sure to check your trigger warnings. The romance in this book is a second chance romance. The book has adult romantic relationships with adult discussions, language, and activities. The spicy scenes are not descriptive. Maxs father has always hated him. Max has never been good enough and his father makes sure he knows it. Even leaving after high school and finding success in his new life, he still isn’t enough in his father’s eyes. So when Laura, his high school sweetheart, wants more, why would he be enough for her? This was an addictive and heartbreaking read.

... Read moreOkay, bookworms, let's talk more about 'Crashing Waves' by Kelsey Kingsley because honestly, that review barely scratched the surface of the emotional whirlwind I experienced! If you're anything like me, you're always on the hunt for a book that truly moves you, and this one delivers in spades. From the moment I picked it up (virtually, on my e-reader, seeing that striking cover with its dark blue and black design and the lonely lighthouse silhouette against stormy waves – a perfect visual metaphor, by the way!), I knew I was in for something intense. The original review mentioned 'emotional damage,' and I promise you, that's not an exaggeration. This isn't your light, fluffy romance. It’s a deep dive into the life of Max, our Male Main Character, and his journey is incredibly raw and heartbreaking. The story starts with a punch to the gut, and honestly, it doesn't let up. You find yourself hoping for a break, a moment of peace for him, but Kelsey Kingsley masterfully keeps the tension high, exploring themes of resilience, trauma, and the enduring impact of childhood struggles. Max's relationship with his father is particularly poignant and sets the stage for many of his future challenges. It's truly a 'coming of age' story, even for a grown man, as he grapples with self-worth and finding his place. What truly sets 'Crashing Waves' apart for me, beyond the gut-wrenching plot, is the second-chance romance woven through it. Max and Laura's connection is palpable, but their path is far from easy. It's filled with angsty moments and difficult conversations, which felt incredibly real. I appreciated that the 'spicy scenes' were handled with a lighter touch; the focus truly remains on the emotional development and the characters' arduous journey back to each other. This isn't a book where the romance overshadows the character development; instead, it's a testament to love enduring through immense hardship. For anyone who loves military romance, this element is woven in thoughtfully, adding another layer of depth to Max's experiences and struggles. It’s not just a backdrop; it shapes who he becomes. And as a reader, being entirely in Max's POV made his struggles and triumphs feel even more immediate and personal. You truly understand his internal battles and motivations. If you've been looking for Kelsey Kingsley books, or specifically for 'Crashing Waves,' and you're wondering if it's for you, here’s my advice: if you crave an intensely emotional, angsty, second-chance military romance with dark themes and a deeply flawed but utterly lovable male main character, then absolutely pick this up. But please, please, check those trigger warnings! This book doesn't shy away from difficult topics, and while it's incredibly rewarding, it does require you to be in the right headspace. It's a powerful story about overcoming adversity, and it will stay with you long after you've turned the last page. It’s definitely one of the most memorable reads I’ve had this year, living up to the stormy promise of its cover.
