... Read moreAs a huge fan of High School DxD, drawing Koneko Toujou has always been a dream of mine. She's such a fascinating character, and I often find myself thinking about her journey throughout the series. When I sat down to create this piece, I really wanted to convey her essence, not just her appearance.
Her personality is what truly draws me in. At first glance, Koneko seems incredibly composed and reserved, almost emotionless. But as you watch the anime, you quickly realize there's so much more beneath the surface. She's fiercely loyal to Issei and her friends, and her quiet demeanor often hides a deep well of protective instincts and genuine care. Many fans wonder if she's a tsundere, but I see her more as a character who's slowly opening up and learning to express her feelings after a difficult past. Her blushes and shy expressions, especially around Issei, are just too endearing to ignore. It’s this gradual development and the glimpses of her softer side that make her so captivating.
Then there's her iconic look! When I started sketching, I focused on her distinct features that make her stand out amongst the High School DxD characters. Her pure white hair, those striking golden eyes, and of course, her adorable cat ears are simply unforgettable. I tried to capture that hint of blushing cheeks and her often shy expression, which really brings out her character. Sometimes, she'll even have a small black cat accessory in her hair, adding to her charm. Her petite stature combined with her immense power as a Rook makes her a truly unique and formidable cat girl.
For this piece, I wanted to experiment with different art supplies. I used a combination of markers and color pencils to bring out the vibrant yet soft tones in her design. The markers helped lay down smooth, even colors, especially for her white hair and uniform, while the color pencils allowed me to add finer details and blend the subtle shading on her face, giving her that shy, almost wistful look. It's always a fun challenge to capture the nuances of an anime character using traditional art mediums.
What truly makes Koneko a fan favorite, in my opinion, is her unwavering support for Issei and her journey of self-discovery. She’s strong, yet vulnerable, and her growth throughout the series is genuinely heartwarming. Whether you love her for her stoic personality, her powerful abilities, or simply because she's the cutest cat girl in High School DxD, there's no denying her impact. I'd love to hear who your favorite character from High School DxD is and why!
