Many people, myself included, dislike the feeling of being directed or controlled—whether as a child told where to go or as adults facing societal constraints. Growing up, I often resented the strict schedules and limits imposed on me, and as I’ve matured, I cherish the ability to make my own choices. This resonates strongly with anyone embracing van life or a nomadic lifestyle, where the joy lies in setting your own rules and creating your own space. Life on the road or in a self-built van allows you to escape the rigidity of conventional living and experience true autonomy. However, this freedom also requires responsibility—planning your days, managing your needs, and navigating unpredictable moments. Ultimately, embracing independence means accepting both the joys and challenges of self-governance, and striving to live authentically without external control. Whether in youth or old age, reclaiming that control over your life can lead to a deeply fulfilling experience.
