Tonight’s Sunset

You know that magical time just after the sun dips below the horizon, when the sky isn't quite dark but isn't blazing with color anymore? That's what I was thinking about when I saw the sky shift from those intense 'vibrant orange and red clouds' to 'soft blues and grays' just after my initial sunset shots in Lake Point. This phase is often called 'nautical twilight,' and it's truly a hidden gem for photographers and nature lovers alike! I used to just pack up after the main 'fiery hues' of sunset faded, but I've learned to stick around a bit longer. Nautical twilight is the period when the sun is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. During civil twilight (what most people consider 'sunset'), the sun is less than 6 degrees below, and there's still enough light to see clearly. But as we move into nautical twilight, the horizon starts to become less distinguishable, and the sky deepens into those incredible, ethereal blues. It's called 'nautical' because, historically, sailors could still use the horizon and visible stars for navigation during this time. For photography, this is where things get really interesting! While the direct golden hour light is gone, this 'transition' period offers a unique palette. The 'dark mountains and fields' that were so prominent during sunset now start to turn into dramatic silhouettes against the deepening sky. This is the perfect time to experiment with longer exposures to capture the subtle light left in the sky and perhaps even the first bright stars or planets appearing. I find that the 'soft blues and grays' create a serene and peaceful mood, very different from the dramatic 'vibrant orange and red' display earlier. It’s a challenge to get right, but the results are always worth it. I've started using apps that predict the exact times for civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight for my location, which is super helpful when planning my photography outings, especially around dates like when the sunset times are specific. It's amazing how much the quality of light changes in just a few minutes.
