I’ve found that recognizing this feeling early, describing it as a "baby feeling of jealousy," helps to prevent it from taking over. Instead of dwelling on negative thoughts, I consciously redirect my focus toward my own goals and growth. One useful technique is to 'reroute' jealousy into inspiration. For example, if a peer succeeds where I hoped to, I remind myself that their success doesn’t diminish my potential. I take time to analyze what they did well and how I can incorporate similar strategies into my routine. This mindset shift helps transform jealousy into a driver for self-improvement rather than anxiety. Maintaining a balanced perspective is essential. I also practice mindfulness and remind myself that each person's journey is unique. This helps me avoid unproductive comparisons and reduces unnecessary stress. Engaging with supportive communities, whether through online forums or study groups, allows for sharing experiences and encouragement, fostering a healthier pre-med environment. Ultimately, managing jealousy as a pre-med student requires patience and self-compassion. Redirecting these feelings with constructive actions like setting new goals, seeking mentorship, and focusing on self-care have greatly improved my mental wellbeing and motivation throughout this challenging and rewarding path.
