Chapter 6: Varicoelectomy
After our failed IUI attempt, the urologist recommended for the husband to undergo a varicoelectomy procedure under GA in hope for an improvement in sperm count. We managed to schedule the surgery in December 2023 as the doctor mentioned that most patients were away for year end vacation. The surgery took about 1 to 2 hours and husband was warded for a night for observation. Any improvement in sperm count should be observed in about 3 to 6 months.

Varicocelectomy is a targeted microsurgical procedure used to correct varicoceles, which are enlarged veins around the testes that can impair sperm quality by causing increased temperature and toxin buildup. From personal experience, the procedure under general anesthesia is relatively quick, typically lasting between one and two hours, and usually requires just an overnight hospital stay. The success of the surgery largely depends on proper diagnosis and follow-up. Improvements in sperm count and quality typically become evident within three to six months post-surgery. During this period, it is important to maintain regular medical check-ups and practice fertility-friendly habits, such as avoiding overheating the testicular area and leading a healthy lifestyle. Many couples facing challenges with fertility due to male factors like varicoceles find this surgery offers hope. While it may not guarantee pregnancy on its own, varicocelectomy can significantly improve sperm parameters, thereby increasing the chances of success with assisted reproductive technologies such as IUI or IVF. For anyone considering this procedure, seeking a skilled microsurgeon is crucial as it minimizes risks and improves outcomes. Support from partners and clinicians throughout the journey also plays a vital role in maintaining positive mental and emotional health during treatment.
