Rest Is a Spiritual Discipline

What does true rest look like for you in this season?

In my experience, understanding rest as a spiritual discipline completely changed my approach to daily life and faith. Many people view rest simply as the absence of work or an indulgent break, but it’s truly an intentional space where we allow God to renew us deeply. Matthew 11:28 invites those burdened to come and find rest, which I’ve found to be a powerful reminder that rest isn’t just physical but spiritual and emotional too. Taking intentional rest has helped me manage stress more effectively and maintain a closer connection with God. It’s not always easy to pause in a culture that values constant productivity, but carving out dedicated moments for quiet reflection, prayer, or simply slowing down can lead to remarkable peace and clarity. For example, setting aside just a few minutes daily for mindful breathing or meditating on scripture refreshes my spirit and realigns my focus. Furthermore, embracing healthy rest has encouraged me to evaluate what true rest looks like during different seasons of life. Sometimes it's a leisurely walk outdoors, while other times it’s simply sitting in silence and releasing worries to God. This practice honors God by acknowledging our limits and embracing the care He intends for us. I encourage others to reflect on their own definition of rest in this season and try integrating spiritual rest into their routines. It’s a transformative discipline that nurtures the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—and guards our peace in daily living.
