To not kill your own cat

As a devoted cat parent, I know the joy our feline companions bring into our lives. But that joy also comes with a big responsibility: keeping them safe and healthy, especially when it comes to their diet! I've spent countless hours researching and learning about what my cat can and cannot eat, often after some close calls. It’s truly eye-opening how many common human foods can be incredibly dangerous for our furry friends, while others can be surprisingly beneficial when given correctly. This guide is my way of sharing what I've learned, helping you navigate the world of cat nutrition so you can avoid potential hazards and offer only the best to your beloved kitty. The "Absolutely Not" List: Toxic Foods Your Cat MUST Avoid It’s shocking how many delicious human treats can be lethal to cats. Always err on the side of caution if you're unsure! Here are some of the most dangerous foods you should never give your cat, many of which I've seen in infographics titled 'Foods That Kill Your Cat': Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine: These contain methylxanthines, which are highly toxic to cats and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and even death. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Grapes and Raisins: Even small amounts can cause acute kidney failure in some cats. The toxic compound isn't fully understood, but the risk is severe. Onions, Garlic, Chives, and Leeks: These all belong to the Allium family and contain compounds that can damage a cat's red blood cells, leading to anemia. This includes powdered, cooked, or raw forms. I once almost gave my cat a tiny bit of onion from my dinner, only to quickly realize how dangerous it could be! Milk and Dairy Products: Despite popular belief, most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Giving them milk can lead to digestive upset, including diarrhea and vomiting. While kittens can tolerate their mother's milk, cow's milk isn't suitable. Avocado: Contains a substance called persin, which can be toxic to cats, leading to vomiting and diarrhea. While the flesh is less concentrated, it's best to avoid all parts of the avocado. Cherries: The pits, stems, and leaves contain cyanide, which is highly poisonous. The flesh itself isn't necessarily toxic, but it's best to avoid the whole fruit to prevent accidental ingestion of toxic parts. Lemons, Limes, and Other Citrus Fruits: The essential oils and psoralens in these fruits can cause digestive upset, and in larger quantities, central nervous system depression. Keep them away from your cat. Nuts (especially Macadamia Nuts): While the exact toxic principle of macadamia nuts is unknown, they can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in pets. Other nuts are often high in fat, leading to pancreatitis. Chicken Bones, Other Bones, and Fat Trimmings: Bones can splinter and cause choking or serious internal damage to your cat's digestive tract. Fat trimmings, cooked or uncooked, can cause pancreatitis. Persimmons, Pears (seeds/pits), and Starfruit: Seeds and pits of fruits like persimmons and pears can contain cyanide. Starfruit can cause kidney issues. Chili Peppers: Can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation and discomfort. Ice Cream: High in sugar and often contains lactose, both of which are bad for cats. List: Safe and Healthy Treats for Your Feline While commercial cat food should be their primary diet, a few human foods can make excellent, healthy treats when prepared correctly and offered in moderation. My cat absolutely loves a tiny bit of plain cooked chicken! Cooked Chicken Breast, Salmon, or Beef: Plain, cooked, boneless, skinless, and unseasoned meat or fish are fantastic sources of protein. Always ensure they are thoroughly cooked to kill any bacteria. Cooked Egg Yolks: A great source of protein and vitamins. Ensure they are fully cooked to eliminate the risk of salmonella. Plain Cooked Pumpkin or Sweet Potatoes: These are excellent sources of fiber and can aid in digestion. Make sure they are plain, unsweetened, and cooked thoroughly. Cooked Carrots or Green Beans: Cut into small, bite-sized pieces, these can be a healthy, crunchy treat. Again, plain and cooked are key. Small Amounts of Watermelon (seedless) or Strawberries/Blueberries: These fruits, given sparingly, can provide some vitamins and hydration. Always remove seeds from watermelon. Cooked Corn (off the cob): A small amount of plain, cooked corn can be given as a treat. Papaya: Small, seedless pieces of papaya can be a safe treat. Cooked Winter Melon or Eggplant: These vegetables, when cooked plain, can be safe in small quantities. Cooked Shrimp: Peeled, de-veined, and cooked shrimp can be a tasty high-protein treat. Key Tips for Feeding Human Foods to Your Cat Moderation is Key: Treats should never make up more than 10% of your cat's daily caloric intake. Plain and Unseasoned: Never give your cat food seasoned with salt, pepper, spices, or sauces. Always Cooked: Raw meat, fish, or eggs can contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli. No Bones: As mentioned, bones are a serious choking hazard and can cause internal injuries. Introduce Slowly: When introducing a new food, start with a tiny amount and observe your cat for any adverse reactions like vomiting or diarrhea. Not a Meal Replacement: Human foods are treats, not substitutes for a nutritionally complete cat food. Hydration: Always ensure your cat has access to fresh, clean water.
