Animating Auras / Kate & Ania

You know that feeling when the joy inside someone is so big, it just radiates outwards? That's exactly what inspired me to start animating auras around my friends! It's a truly magical way to celebrate the amazing people in my life, turning ordinary videos into shimmering, vibrant cartoon art. For me, it's a personal project that truly embodies the idea that "ANIMATING AURAS because my Friends are Art." Every frame is a loving tribute to their spirit. If you've ever wondered how to bring that kind of animated glow to your own memories, let me share a bit about my process. It's really about capturing that special energy and making it visually pop. I start with a short video clip – often a candid moment, like friends laughing or sharing a quiet conversation. The key is to pick a clip where the person's personality really shines through. Procreate Dreams has been my go-to tool for this, but the principles can be applied with other animation software too. First, I import the video and then the real fun begins: rotoscoping. For those new to it, rotoscoping is essentially tracing over live-action footage, frame by frame, to create an animated effect. It sounds tedious, and sometimes it is, but it's incredibly meditative and rewarding. I focus on outlining the person, then adding layers of color and shimmer around them. Think about the colors that best represent their personality or the mood of the moment. For example, warm yellows and oranges for a joyful, energetic friend, or cool blues and purples for someone calm and introspective. To create that "cartoon aura" effect, don't be afraid to experiment with different brush types and opacity settings. I love using soft, glowing brushes for the inner aura, and then adding sharper, more defined lines for the outer edges to give it that dynamic, animated feel. The goal is to make it look like energy is literally flowing around them! It’s not just about drawing; it’s about feeling the rhythm of the video and letting the colors dance with it. Each frame is a chance to add a little more magic, building up the intensity of the aura. One tip I've learned is to start with simpler movements. Don't pick a video where your subject is wildly flailing around for your first attempt! A gentle head turn or a simple gesture is perfect for getting the hang of frame-by-frame animation. Also, play around with different animation speeds once you've done your rotoscoping. Sometimes slowing down the aura's movement can give it a more ethereal feel, while speeding it up can make it look more energetic. The beauty of this process is that every choice you make adds to the unique storytelling of that animated memory. It's so fulfilling to see these moments come alive, truly making my friends feel like living works of art.
