Avoiding making these mistakes, save this checklist when moving into your first apartment 💸
- Document everything and take photos. Prior to moving in, make sure you test everything out and take photos of everything. This includes blinds, walls, floors, doors, door frames etc.
- Appliances should also be tested out and made sure to be working properly. Once you sign off on a lease, everything in your apartment will be your responsibility.
- Either fill out landlord's checklist or create your own when checking everything off. Have your landlord sign off on everything.
- Take note of any existing damage and make sure to let your landlord know.
- Clean throughly prior to moving in. Wipe down surfaces and mop floors. This ensures you won't be blamed for dirtiness later.
- Follow up with written damages or fixtures in writing. It's important to document all this as your lease goes on.
The more detailed you are the better.
