A flash of red and black brightened up Westbourne, Texas today when a Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) dropped by for a meal. With its fiery crimson head, sharp black wings, and clean white chest, this striking bird stood out against the feeder like living artwork.

Texans know that moments like this remind us why our backyards and small towns are treasures worth protecting. Seeing this woodpecker cling to the mesh with such confidence is a reminder of the wild beauty that still thrives across the Lone Star State.
