Only zigzag first in an open field, hallway, etc.! Here’s what you SHOULD do first if there’s someone opening fire!
When confronted with an active shooter scenario, knowing how to react immediately is crucial for survival. While zigzag running may help in wide open fields or long hallways to make yourself a harder target, it’s not always the best option. My personal experience attending safety training revealed that your first priority should always be to find immediate cover or escape routes whenever possible. Hiding behind solid objects or barricading yourself can significantly increase your chances of staying safe. Additionally, situational awareness plays a vital role. Understanding your environment can help you identify the safest path to exit or the best place to hide. Practicing controlled breathing and keeping calm under pressure also greatly improves your ability to think clearly and make smart decisions during such emergencies. Moreover, it’s important to remember that every active shooter scenario is different. If you can’t run, your next best option might be to hide silently or, as a last resort, defend yourself with any available objects. This layered approach to self-defense combines physical tactics with mental preparedness to increase your odds of survival. Taking self-defense classes geared toward women or general safety tips can also empower you with practical skills and confidence. Remember, the goal is to protect yourself and others by quickly assessing your surroundings and choosing the best course of action rather than relying solely on running in a zigzag pattern.
