I mean…not the main character. But I feel like that might take people out of it lol 😂 #booktok #indieauthorsoftiktok #newbookrelease #animeinspired #fantasybook
Okay, #booktok fam and fellow indie authors, let's talk about the glorious, chaotic mess that is worldbuilding! For those who've been with me since my last project, 'Noimnot Sad Sophia' (still warms my heart that so many of you connected with that story!), I’m now knee-deep in a brand new adventure: an anime-inspired fantasy novel. And let me tell you, the creative process is always full of unexpected twists. Right now, I'm facing a hilarious yet surprisingly significant hurdle: the hero’s name. I’ve got this incredibly complex, powerful, and mysterious protagonist, destined to save nations and wield ancient magic. But every time I try to pin down his name, my brain just keeps shouting 'Kevin!' I mean, come on! 'Hero Kevin valiantly charged into battle!' It just doesn’t have the same ring as a grand, fantastical name, does it? It’s a constant battle between wanting something unique and relatable, and then accidentally landing on something so mundane it breaks the epic immersion. This is the kind of stuff that keeps indie authors up at night! My vision for this novel is heavily influenced by my favorite anime. Think sweeping landscapes, dynamic action sequences, and characters with deeply emotional backstories. I'm trying to capture that blend of high-stakes adventure and profound philosophical moments that makes shows like Attack on Titan or Fullmetal Alchemist so compelling. This means crafting a magic system that feels both powerful and logical, designing unique cultures, and imagining creatures that could leap straight off the screen. Even small details, like whether a character’s 'REAL NAME: UNKNOWN' is a plot point or just an early placeholder, become crucial. Or how their 'HEIGHT: VARIABLE' might suggest shapeshifting abilities or magical growth. These abstract character sheet notes ('WEIGHT: VARIABLE') are the seeds from which entire personas grow. The journey of an #indieauthorsoftiktok is all about making these creative choices, sometimes on a whim, sometimes after weeks of deliberation. There’s no big publisher telling you what names sound best or what plot points are marketable. It's just you, your imagination, and the amazing community on #booktok. It’s challenging, but so incredibly rewarding to see a world slowly come to life, piece by piece. So, what's your take? When you're worldbuilding your own #fantasybook, do you ever find yourself drawn to unexpectedly ordinary names for extraordinary characters? Or do you lean into the fantastical from day one? I'd love to hear your worldbuilding tips and naming strategies! Maybe you can help me save Kevin from his mundane fate... or embrace it!
