What I did before starting my job as a Nurse

I just started new position as an Interventional Radiology Nurse and the process to get orientation is extensive!

This is everything I did before I started my position!

📝 if you think tests are done after nursing school think again! I had about 4 tests to do! Medication math (I know ☠️), Medications, Cardiac rhythms, and Radiology specific

👩🏻‍⚕️ physical and blood work. They need to make sure you have all your immunizations and also a drug test!

🖥️ modules, so many modules to do before even stepping foot in the hospital! I thought my eyes were going to fall out!

💻 computer training! There are so many different computer systems! Cerner, Epic, Meditech! I had 2 days of computer training to get familiar with the system

📄 I feel like I filled out so much paper work over the last few months! It felt like never ending information they needed!

🎒 getting all the new supplies I needed for the new job! Like scrubs of a certain color and a new lunch and back pack but that’s just because I wanted it!

Starting a new job is fun and exciting but it is quite the process before you even begin!

... Read moreEmbarking on a nursing career, especially in specialized fields like interventional radiology, requires rigorous preparation. Before stepping into my role, I faced multiple mandatory assessments including medication math, cardiac rhythms, and specialized radiology tests, all designed to ensure readiness for patient care. Furthermore, extensive medical evaluations were conducted to verify all immunizations and conduct drug screening, reinforcing the importance of safety in healthcare. In parallel, I tackled a plethora of online educational modules and systems training, familiarizing myself with various healthcare platforms such as Cerner, Epic, and Meditech. This phase was crucial for ensuring proficiency in patient management and electronic health records—an increasingly vital aspect of modern healthcare. Additionally, I meticulously completed an avalanche of paperwork that was necessary for compliance and organizational protocols. Lastly, gearing up for the job involved collecting essential supplies like scrubs and personal items for work. While the process felt overwhelming at times, I recognized it as a necessary step towards a fulfilling nursing career. Starting a new role is undeniably exciting but requires substantial effort in preparation to ensure success and safety in providing healthcare. Thus, every new nurse should be prepared for a similar comprehensive journey.
