Growing up feeling like I didn’t quite fit in with other Black girls has been a challenging journey. It’s like walking through life with an invisible barrier that makes you question why you don’t feel accepted or understood. For me, part of it was not knowing how to navigate some cultural expectations, like hair braiding or particular ways of expressing myself. I’ve often been told that I don’t speak or dress the 'right' way, and that can sting deeply. Despite my genuine love and pride for Black culture and community, it sometimes feels like I’m on the outside looking in. There’s an unspoken pressure to meet certain stereotypes or norms, and when you don’t, it can lead to feeling isolated or even invisible. Yet, I believe there’s room for all kinds of Black identities — from the 'baddies' to those who don’t fit typical labels. Embracing this diversity helps heal that loneliness. What has helped me is reaching out and finding sisters who appreciate all Black women, regardless of how “typical” or “proper” one looks or acts. Spaces where people uplift and support each other without judgment are priceless. I remind myself that being 'me' — authentic and unapologetic — is enough and that there are indeed others searching for the same real connections. If you feel this way, know you’re not alone. Finding friends or communities that resonate with your experience can change your perspective immensely. Whether online or in person, look for hashtags like #relatablepov, #properblackgirls, or #suburbanblackgirl to find others sharing similar stories. Sometimes, it just takes one genuine conversation to feel seen and accepted. Keep being your authentic self, and you will find your tribe.
