Hey coffee lovers! As a former barista, one of the things I miss most is the joy of crafting delicious coffee drinks and seeing people's faces light up. While I loved trying new combinations like a unique maple butter latte, there's nothing quite like perfecting a popular classic at home. Today, I want to share my secrets for making a fantastic Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso, just like you'd get from your favorite coffee shop! This drink is a true crowd-pleaser, and once you master it, you'll feel like a pro. Here's how I make my layered brown sugar shaken espresso: What you'll need: 2 shots of fresh, hot espresso (or strong coffee concentrate) 2-3 tablespoons of brown sugar simple syrup (you can easily make this by dissolving equal parts brown sugar and hot water) Ice 1/2 - 3/4 cup oat milk (or your preferred milk) A dash of cinnamon (optional, but highly recommended for that extra warmth!) A shaker bottle or a jar with a tight lid A tall glass Let's brew and shake! Prepare your espresso: Brew two shots of espresso directly into your shaker bottle or jar. If you don't have an espresso machine, a strong, concentrated cold brew or Moka pot coffee works too. Add the sweetness: While the espresso is hot, stir in your brown sugar simple syrup. The heat helps it combine perfectly. Shake it up: Fill your shaker about two-thirds full with ice. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. You want to create a nice foam on top of the espresso and chill it down quickly. This is where the magic happens for that signature texture! Layer it beautifully: Grab your tall glass and fill it with fresh ice. Pour the shaken espresso mixture over the ice. You'll see that lovely top foam layer forming already. Add the milk: Slowly pour your oat milk over the espresso mixture. This creates those beautiful distinct layers that make the drink so visually appealing. Garnish: Finish it off with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top of the foam. Take a picture, then enjoy! But being a former barista isn't just about recipes; it's about understanding the little things that make a huge difference. Here are a couple of my personal tips for elevating your home coffee game: Quality Beans Matter: Invest in good quality, freshly roasted coffee beans. It's the foundation of any great coffee drink. Grind them just before brewing for the best flavor. Don't Overlook Temperature: The temperature of your water for espresso or coffee brewing is crucial. Too hot, and it can burn the coffee; too cold, and it won't extract properly. Aim for around 200°F (93°C). Froth Milk Like a Pro (without a steamer!): If you don't have a steamer wand, you can still get decent foam. Heat your milk on the stovetop or microwave, then use a small whisk, a French press, or even a jar with a lid to vigorously shake or pump it until frothy. The key is incorporating air. I hope these insights from my time behind the bar help you create some amazing coffee experiences right in your own kitchen! What's your favorite coffee drink to experiment with?
