... Read moreIt feels so good to get back into the swing of things with this Josephine Baker drawing! Sometimes all it takes is a burst of inspiration to reignite that creative spark. For anyone else out there looking to pick up their digital pen, here are a few things that help me when I’m getting started or feeling a bit stuck, especially when working on a piece that's in progress. First off, don't overthink it! Just like my current piece, it doesn't have to be perfect from the get-go. Embrace the process and let your creativity flow. I absolutely love using my iPad for art because it's so portable and the creative possibilities feel endless. For me, Procreate is a game-changer – it has so many brushes and features that make digital art feel just like traditional drawing, but with undo buttons, which are a lifesaver! If you're a beginner, don't worry about having all the fancy tools right away; just start with what you have. There are tons of free apps and basic styluses that can get you started too! When I chose Josephine Baker as my subject, it was because her story is so vibrant and inspiring. She wasn't just an iconic entertainer; she was a trailblazer, a civil rights activist, and a symbol of freedom and resilience. Capturing even a glimpse of her powerful essence, especially in an initial sketch, brings me immense joy. If you’re looking for inspiration for your own art, try drawing people, places, or things that genuinely move you and have a story. It makes the whole creative journey so much more engaging and personal. A major part of my process is allowing myself to just 'vibe' with the art. Sometimes I’ll put on some music, clear my mind, and just let my hand move. This particular piece, for instance, came purely from that spontaneous feeling. There's no pressure, no tracing involved – just me and the digital canvas. I find that when I let go of the need for perfection and just enjoy the act of creating, the art often turns out more authentic and expressive. It’s amazing what you can create when you simply trust your instincts. For those curious about the technical side of iPad drawing, don't be intimidated by layers! They're your best friend for non-destructive editing. I usually start with a rough sketch layer, then refine on another, and finally add colors and details on separate layers. And remember, every artist, no matter how seasoned, has pieces that are in progress. The journey of creation, the learning, and the joy of seeing something come to life layer by layer is often far more rewarding than just admiring the finished product. So, keep drawing, keep experimenting, and most importantly, keep enjoying your unique artistic journey!
