4 steps to breakup healing

2024/2/10 Edited to

... Read moreBreakups are never easy, and it's so important to remember that this heavy feeling isn't exclusive to romantic relationships. Losing a close friend, a long-term platonic connection, or even a community can feel just as devastating. The path to healing is deeply personal, but I've found that having a structured approach can make a world of difference. It’s about more than just moving on; it’s about rediscovering yourself and building a stronger foundation for the future. The first and perhaps most crucial step in any breakup recovery process, whether from a romantic partner or a platonic bond, is truly allowing yourself to feel the emotions. It’s tempting to push them down, distract yourself, or pretend you’re okay, but trust me, that only delays the inevitable. I've learned that acknowledging emotions like sadness, anger, confusion, and even relief is vital. Journaling can be incredibly therapeutic here – just writing down whatever comes to mind without judgment. Some find solace in talking to a trusted person, while others prefer quiet reflection. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to grieve; the goal is simply to be present with your feelings, allowing them to surface and eventually pass, much like waves on a shore. This act of acknowledging emotions is a powerful step towards true healing. Next, don't underestimate the immense power of your platonic relationships. When a romantic partnership ends, or even when a significant friendship shifts, it’s easy to retreat. But this is precisely when the value of friendships shines brightest. These are the people who often know you deeply, offer unconditional support, and can provide a much-needed sense of normalcy and joy. Reach out to them – organize a coffee date, a movie night, or just a simple phone call. Let them know you're struggling, if you feel comfortable. Leaning on friends doesn't make you weak; it shows strength and allows others to show up for you. Their perspective and unwavering presence can be a lifeline, reminding you of who you are beyond the relationship that ended. After a breakup, your routine might feel empty or tainted with memories. That’s why getting out of your element is so transformative. This doesn't mean you need to book an expensive trip (though if you can, go for it!). It could be exploring a new neighborhood, trying a dance class, picking up a sport, or volunteering for a cause you care about. The goal is to create new experiences and memories that aren't tied to the past relationship. Simultaneously, starting a project can be incredibly empowering. Whether it's painting, learning a new language, baking, redecorating a room, or even just organizing your closet, having something tangible to focus your energy on provides a sense of accomplishment and purpose. It redirects your focus from rumination to creation. Both 'getting out of your element' and 'starting a project' are fantastic ways to rediscover your independence and build confidence, reminding you of all the amazing things you're capable of, outside of any relationship. Remember, healing isn't linear, but by embracing these steps – feeling your feelings, investing in your platonic relationships, getting out of your comfort zone, and channeling your energy into new projects – you’re actively participating in your own recovery journey. You're strong, and you deserve a path forward filled with self-love and renewed purpose.
