i’ve been working on my physical health for about 8 years, and going to the gym for 5. if I could go back and start all over again, I would work hard on these 3 things, rather than working on getting the perfect body. physical and mental health shouldn’t have an end destination—when we think in this way, we take on routines and diets that aren’t sustainable. but if you think of it like something you’re taking on in your life indefinitely, you’ll structure it in a way that really works for you.

For years, I chased the idea of a 'perfect' physique, often trying unsustainable diets and routines that left me feeling drained. If I could go back and tell my past self anything, it would be to focus on three core pillars that truly changed everything in my 1-year transformation, leading me from 120lbs (54kg) to a strong 145lbs (65kg). 1. Fueling My Body: The Power of Eating More For so long, I believed that less food meant better results. I was probably eating around 1200-1600 calories a day, constantly feeling hungry and tired. It was a huge mental shift to realize I needed to increase my calorie intake significantly to build muscle and support my active lifestyle. I slowly but surely worked my way up to around 2500 calories daily. This wasn't just about eating more; it was about eating *smart*. My plate started featuring more nutrient-dense foods, like hearty portions of scrambled eggs and potatoes, which became staples for muscle growth. It felt counter-intuitive at first, especially with the fear of 'weight gain,' but this strategic increase in food intake was absolutely crucial for the rapid muscle growth I experienced and for developing a curvier, more muscular build, especially in my glutes. 2. Battling Mindset & Overcoming Weight Gain Stigmas Perhaps the biggest transformation happened in my mind. Society often pressures women to be 'skinny,' and I had definitely internalized that misogyny. The idea of gaining weight, even muscle, was daunting. I had to actively work on addressing these stigmas around weight gain. It meant letting go of the number on the scale as my sole measure of success and instead focusing on how I felt, my strength, and my overall health. Gaining 11kg was a monumental step, not just physically, but mentally. It wasn't about becoming 'bigger' in a negative sense, but about becoming stronger, healthier, and ultimately, more confident in my own body. The positive body changes I saw, like increased muscle definition, reinforced that I was on the right path. 3. Training for Strength & Sustainable Health My gym transformation wasn't about endless cardio or tiny weights. It was about purposeful strength training. I learned to lift heavy, challenge myself, and focus on progressive overload. This shift from just 'working out' to 'training' was empowering. It wasn't about body perfection anymore; it was about prioritizing health, building functional strength, and seeing what my body could truly achieve. The results were incredible: gaining 11kg didn't just mean a change in physique, it brought tangible improvements to my daily life. My energy levels soared, my sleep quality drastically improved, and I felt a profound sense of optimism and confidence that transcended the gym. This journey taught me that true wellness isn't a destination; it's a sustainable lifestyle built on self-care, strength, and a positive mindset.
