More Face Shapes & Their Best Makeup Looks!
• Heart Face Shape
For a heart face shape, the goal is to soften the wider forehead and balance it with a narrower chin. I love to apply a subtle contour along the temples and the sides of the forehead, bringing it down slightly towards the cheekbones. Highlight the center of your forehead, the bridge of your nose, and especially your chin to bring it forward and create balance. When it comes to blush, apply it just below the apples of your cheeks and blend upward towards your ears. For eyes, a soft winged liner can be really flattering. And for lips, fuller, rounded lips work beautifully to add width to the lower part of your face. Think about drawing attention to the center of your face and adding softness to your jawline!
• Diamond Face Shape
If you have a diamond face shape, you likely have a narrower forehead and chin, with wider cheekbones. The key here is to soften those prominent cheekbones and broaden the forehead and chin areas. I like to contour lightly under the cheekbones, blending towards the temples, and also along the very tip of the chin to soften it. Highlight your forehead (especially the sides) and your jawline to add width. Apply blush directly to the apples of your cheeks to bring them forward, blending softly. For your eyes, you can totally rock dramatic looks like a smokey eye to draw attention upwards. And for lips, any style works, but a bold lip can really complement your strong features.
• Oblong (Rectangle) Face Shape
An oblong or rectangle face shape is longer than it is wide, often with a straight jawline and forehead. My trick here is to shorten the appearance of the face and add width. Contour heavily along the top of the forehead at the hairline and under the chin to visually shorten the face. Also, a light contour directly under the cheekbones, blended horizontally, can add width. Highlight the center of the forehead, under the eyes, and the center of the chin. Blush should be applied horizontally across the apples of the cheeks to create width. For eyes, strong horizontal lines like a classic winged liner or eyeshadow blended outwards work wonders. For lips, fuller, wider styles help to balance the length of the face. The main goal is to break up the length with horizontal elements.
Mastering Soft Contour Placement for Natural Makeup
Many of you asked about achieving a natural, everyday look, and it all comes down to soft contour placement and excellent blending! For any face shape, the trick is to use a cream or liquid contour that's just one or two shades darker than your skin tone. Apply it with a small, dense synthetic brush or even your fingers for precision. Instead of harsh lines, think of creating soft shadows. For example, for an oval face makeup look, instead of a sharp line under your cheekbones, use small dots or a very light swipe and blend, blend, blend with a damp beauty sponge or a fluffy brush until it disappears into your skin. The goal isn't to see the contour, but to see the effect of the shadow. For highlighting, stick to a subtle, dewy liquid or cream highlighter on the high points of your face – cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid's bow. This creates a natural glow, not a glitter bomb! Remember, natural makeup oval face or any face shape means enhancing, not altering.
How to Figure Out Your Face Shape for the Best Results!
If you're still not sure about your face shape, don't worry! It's super common. Here's a quick way I use: Stand in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back. Take a dry-erase marker (or even lipstick!) and trace the outline of your face, starting from your chin and going all the way around your hairline and back to your chin. Step back and observe the shape you've drawn. Does it resemble an oval face shape diagram, a square face shape, or a heart face shape diagram? This simple trick can be super helpful in understanding your unique bone structure and applying these tips effectively!
I hope these extra tips help you feel even more confident in your makeup application! Follow for Part 2, where I'll dive deeper into more advanced techniques and answer more of your amazing questions!
