Embryo freezing
Embryos are frozen during an #ivf cycle for a number of reasons. The process involves placing an embryo in media (fluids) that remove water from the embryo’s cells. This prevent ice crystals from forming since they can damage the cells during the process. It’s common to see embryos collapse (shrink) while they are being frozen as the water is removed from their cells. The media also coat the cells with a cryoprotectant agent that protects the cells when they’re frozen.
The embryos are then placed on the tip of a labeled cryo device and plunged into liquid nitrogen. Multiple devices with embryos can be stored together in plastic goblets, which are attached to metal canes. These keep the embryos secure while they are frozen. Embryos can remain frozen indefinitely inside specialized storage tanks. These tanks are filled weekly and measured 3 or more times a week to ensure that the embryos are always submerged in liquid nitrogen.
