Shopping in Japan is fun!

Tokyo

... Read moreOh my goodness, if you haven't shopped in Japan yet, you are in for a treat! My recent trip was an absolute dream, and I wanted to share my top tips and favorite finds, especially for fellow shoppers looking for unique treasures. You know how those 'things to get in Japan for girls' lists pop up? Well, I tested them all out! First stop, Tokyo! The sheer variety here is mind-boggling. For trendy fashion and quirky accessories, Harajuku is an absolute must. Takeshita Street is iconic, but don't be afraid to duck into the side streets for some really cool shops. I found some amazing vintage pieces and adorable stationery that you simply can't get anywhere else. Shibuya is perfect for department store hopping and finding everything from high-end fashion to innovative electronics. And if you're looking for unique souvenirs or 'pasalubong' for friends and family back home, don't miss the shops around Asakusa's Senso-ji Temple for traditional crafts, or explore the modern boutiques of Ginza for a touch of luxury. Seriously, the beauty aisles in Japanese drugstores are a gold mine for skincare and makeup – prepare to spend hours! I even managed to snag a gorgeous pair of Onitsuka Tiger shoes, a brand that's super popular there. Then, we ventured to Kyoto, which offers a completely different, yet equally enchanting, shopping experience. Here, it’s all about tradition and craftsmanship. I adored browsing the Nishiki Market for local delicacies, beautiful ceramics, and unique kitchenware. It’s a sensory overload in the best way possible! The areas around Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Gion are fantastic for traditional Japanese goods like elegant kimonos, intricate fans, and deliciously fragrant matcha-flavored treats. I picked up some exquisite handmade paper and stunning pottery that now remind me of Kyoto every day. And speaking of Kyoto, while you're there immersing yourself in its rich culture, make sure to check out the art scene. I was incredibly fortunate to visit the Andy Warhol exhibition at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. It was such an unexpected and inspiring detour from my shopping adventures, truly adding another layer to my Japan experience. It ran from September 17, 2022, to February 12, 2023, showcasing how even modern art finds a beautiful home in this ancient city. My biggest advice for your Japan shopping guide? Wear comfortable shoes, keep an eye out for tax-free shopping signs (it makes a huge difference!), and be prepared to fall in love with everything. From the latest fashion trends in Tokyo to timeless crafts in Kyoto, Japan truly has something for everyone. Happy shopping!
