Forgive…move on

San Diego

... Read moreForgiveness has always been one of the toughest challenges in my life. It’s easy to hold onto grudges, to replay slights, and to justify our anger. But this path, I’ve learned, only leads to bitterness and keeps us shackled to the past. It wasn't until I truly delved into Matthew 18:21-35 that I began to understand the profound liberation that comes with letting go. In this powerful passage, Peter asks Jesus a seemingly simple question: 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?' And Jesus' answer, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times,' or as some translations put it, 'seventy times seven,' struck me deeply. It wasn't just a number; it was an invitation to boundless forgiveness, a call to reflect God's own infinite mercy. Jesus then illustrates this with the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant. A king forgives his servant an enormous debt, one that could never be repaid. Yet, that same servant, upon leaving the king, refuses to forgive a much smaller debt owed to him by a fellow servant. The king's righteous anger and the servant's subsequent punishment serve as a stark reminder: because we have been forgiven so much by God, how can we withhold forgiveness from others? This parable isn't just a story; it's a mirror reflecting our own hearts. How often do we, like the unmerciful servant, receive immense grace and then struggle to extend even a fraction of it to those who have wronged us? I know I have. Holding onto resentment felt like I was punishing the other person, but in reality, I was only poisoning myself. It was through understanding this divine expectation of forgiveness that I started to see my own burden. I remember once hearing insights from Nina Benson on the practical steps to forgiveness, and her words really resonated with me. She emphasized that forgiveness isn't about condoning the wrong or pretending it didn't hurt. It's about making a conscious decision to release the offender from our judgment and, more importantly, to release ourselves from the emotional prison of anger and bitterness. It's a journey, not a destination, and sometimes you have to choose to forgive daily, even hourly. For me, 'moving on' became intertwined with this process. You can't truly move forward if you're constantly looking back in anger or pain. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door to a new chapter. It allows you to reclaim your peace, your joy, and your energy, redirecting it towards growth and healing rather than dwelling on past hurts. It's about acknowledging the pain, processing it, and then choosing to not let it define your future. This reflection on Matthew 18:21-35, focusing on a truly compassionate understanding of 'kapatawaran' (forgiveness) and 'pagpapatuloy' (moving forward), is something I believe can resonate deeply with anyone seeking spiritual peace. It's a universal message of grace, mercy, and the incredible freedom found when we choose to release the chains of unforgiveness. It’s a challenging path, yes, but the peace and liberation on the other side are absolutely worth it. My journey to truly forgive and move on is ongoing, but with this scripture as my guide, I feel a profound sense of hope and healing.
