90’s Hair Inspo

Hey everyone! So many of you have asked how I achieve that perfectly bouncy, voluminous, and effortlessly chic 90s hairstyle, and yes, it’s definitely inspired by our favorite Friends character, Rachel Green! It's that iconic look with the face-framing layers and incredible movement. I'm excited to share my full routine, especially since recreating this voluminous, layered blonde hair doesn't have to break the bank. First things first, prep is key! I always start with freshly washed, towel-dried hair. Before applying any heat, a good heat protectant is a must to keep your locks healthy. Then, I work a generous amount of volumizing mousse through my roots to mid-lengths. This is where the magic truly begins – it gives your hair the hold and lift needed for that signature 90s bounce. Now, for the stars of the show: large Velcro rollers! You might think they're old school, but trust me, they're a game-changer for achieving that salon-quality fullness without excessive heat. I usually grab rollers that are about 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter for maximum volume. Here's my step-by-step rolling technique: Sectioning: I start by sectioning my hair. I take a top section from ear to ear, then two side sections, and finally the back. Front & Crown: For the most impact, I focus on the front and crown. I take a 1-inch section of slightly damp hair, comb it smooth, and place the roller at the ends. Then, I roll it upwards towards my scalp, making sure the hair is taut but not pulling too hard. The key is to roll away from your face at the front for those classic flipped-out layers. Sides & Back: Continue with the side sections, rolling them away from your face. For the back, you can roll them vertically or horizontally, depending on whether you want more lift at the root or a wave throughout. Heat Set (Optional): Once all the rollers are in, I sometimes give my hair a quick blast with a hairdryer on a low-medium setting for about 5-10 minutes, just to help set the curl. Cool Down: This is crucial! Let your hair cool completely with the rollers in. This allows the curl to set and helps it last longer. I usually leave them in for at least 20-30 minutes, or longer if I have time. When it’s time to remove them, be gentle! Unroll each roller carefully, starting from the bottom sections first. Don't pull or tug. Once all the rollers are out, flip your head upside down and gently shake your hair to loosen the curls. Then, flip back up and use your fingers (not a brush!) to separate and style the curls into that desired 90s style with plenty of volume and movement. A light spritz of flexible hold hairspray will keep everything in place without making your hair stiff. This technique works wonders for adding incredible body and recreating that iconic Rachel Green hair effortlessly.
