Rest on my TT

... Read moreIt's been a real struggle lately, feeling like every meal is a gamble. I've noticed a pattern of getting hives and other uncomfortable reactions after eating, and I'm constantly wondering: is it an allergic reaction, or a histamine reaction? The line between the two can feel really blurry, but from what I’ve learned, a true allergy usually involves an immediate, immune-system-driven response to a specific protein, while a histamine reaction, or histamine intolerance, is more about your body struggling to break down or process histamine, which can build up from various foods. It often feels like a delayed or cumulative effect, which is exactly what I've been experiencing. One of the most frustrating aspects is the facial reactions. Sometimes, after consuming something I suspect is high in histamine, my face feels hot, flushed, and I might even get bumps or a rash – what some might call a 'histamine intolerance face.' It's not just uncomfortable; it's also very visible, which can be a bit disheartening. I'm trying to pay closer attention to what triggers these specific symptoms. Identifying high-histamine foods has become a bit of a detective game. I recently made some homemade ice cream, and without thinking, added chocolate chips. Turns out, chocolate is a known high-histamine food! No wonder I felt a reaction. But it’s not just obvious culprits. I’ve also noticed that reheated leftovers seem to be a major trigger for me. I used to just pop everything in the microwave, but now I’m realizing that as food sits, especially certain types like meat or fish, bacterial action can increase histamine levels. So, that leftover pasta or chicken from last night could be a histamine bomb for someone like me. Fermented foods, aged cheeses, processed meats, and even some fruits like strawberries can also be problematic. It's a steep learning curve trying to figure out what's safe and what's not, especially when you're just trying to enjoy a meal. My journey with SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) also complicates things immensely. I've been on a protocol and was taking Zyrtec, which helped with the hives, but I also used to take Pepcid. My practitioner recently advised me to stop the Pepcid, and it made sense why. Pepcid is an acid reducer, and for someone like me who already struggles with naturally low stomach acid and SIBO, reducing it further can actually worsen SIBO. Stomach acid is crucial for digestion and for keeping bacteria in check, so lowering it can allow the SIBO to come back or prevent healing. It’s like a gut health puzzle, and every piece affects the others. I'm even in the middle of re-testing to see if my SIBO is still positive, which would definitely explain a lot of these ongoing gut and histamine issues. It feels like a constant balancing act, trying to manage histamine reactions while also addressing the root cause like SIBO. For now, I'm focusing on fresh, low-histamine foods, being mindful of leftovers, and waiting for my SIBO test results. It's not easy, but I'm hopeful that understanding these connections will help me find a path to feeling better and finally getting rid of these annoying hives after eating.
