Everyone goes to Lisbon in the summer.
And I get it, the weather is great, everything is open, the city is buzzing.
But it’s also when it’s the most crowded… and the most expensive.
If you want a different experience, here’s something most people don’t talk about:
The best time to visit Lisbon is actually March–May or late September–October.
The weather is still warm.
The crowds are lighter.
And prices for flights and hotels are noticeably lower.
You can walk the city without feeling rushed, get into restaurants without long waits, and actually enjoy the viewpoints without fighting for space.
It just feels… easier.
If you’re planning a trip and looking for a smarter way to travel, this is one of those small changes that makes a big difference.
Save this for your Lisbon trip planning.

From my own experience visiting Lisbon during these shoulder seasons, I can say it truly transforms the entire trip. When I visited in late September, the city still had that summer warmth but without the overwhelming heat and tourist crush that comes in July and August. Walking around neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto felt much more pleasant because you could slow down and really appreciate the local culture and architecture. Restaurants were easier to get into without making reservations months ahead, and the prices were noticeably lower. I even got to enjoy long, leisurely dinners overlooking the Tagus River without the usual summer hustle. The viewpoints, like Miradouro de Santa Catarina and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, were peaceful and offered unobstructed panoramic views. Additionally, traveling during these months means airlines and hotels often offer better deals which allowed me to stretch my vacation budget further. It’s also less stressful finding accommodations as there’s more availability. If you love photography, the lighting during these periods is also beautiful, with softer sunsets and fewer harsh midday sun rays. Overall, choosing these off-peak months changes your Lisbon experience from rushed and crowded to relaxing and authentic. I highly recommend this timing if you want to see the city’s charm at a more leisurely pace and enjoy everything Lisbon has to offer without the typical summer congestion.
