Can You Use Human Shampoo on a Horse? | Exsivia Podcast
As a horse owner, it’s natural to wonder whether the shampoos we use for ourselves are suitable for our equine friends. While it might be tempting to grab the human shampoo bottle in a pinch, there are important differences to consider. Horses have a different skin pH and coat structure compared to humans. Human shampoos are formulated primarily for the pH of human skin, which is typically around 5.5, whereas horses have a more neutral to slightly alkaline pH range of about 7 to 8. Using a product with the wrong pH can disrupt the horse’s natural skin barrier, potentially causing irritation or dryness. Furthermore, many human shampoos contain ingredients like fragrances and detergents designed for human hair that might strip natural oils from a horse’s coat or cause allergic reactions. Equine-specific shampoos are created to maintain the health of the horse’s coat, often incorporating ingredients that soothe the skin and preserve natural oils. That said, in emergencies where no horse shampoo is available, a mild, gentle, and unscented baby shampoo without harsh chemicals might be acceptable for use on a horse, but only sparingly and with thorough rinsing. Regular use of human shampoo is not recommended. In my experience, switching to a shampoo formulated specifically for horses improved my horse’s coat shine and reduced skin flakiness. Additionally, proper rinsing during the bath and avoiding over-bathing are key factors in maintaining healthy skin. Regular grooming combined with appropriate bathing products can greatly enhance your horse's comfort and overall appearance.
