What Were You Taught to Believe?
Have you ever stopped to think about the beliefs you grew up with? Many of us were taught things like, 'You are born sinful' or 'You’re nothing without God.' These beliefs can feel limiting and harmful, as we grow.
Today, I want to invite you to a journaling exercise. Grab a pen and paper—or open your notes app—and take a moment to reflect. Write down 5 core beliefs you were taught growing up. These could be about yourself, the world, or even the divine.
For example, I grew up believing that questioning authority was a sign of rebellion and sin because I believed 1 Samuel 15:23, rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. This was over something as simple as not wanting to wear dresses and skirts. It shaped how I saw my feelings and even how I saw myself. But when I started questioning that belief, I found a whole new world of freedom. I don’t have to accept things that I consider wrong, and rebellion is a tool for change.”
Now that you’ve written your list, ask yourself these two questions:
1. Are these beliefs serving you today?
2. What would your life look like if you let go of the beliefs that no longer fit?
Here are three affirmations to help rewrite the narrative of limiting beliefs:
1. "I am worthy and whole, just as I am, without needing to prove myself to anyone or anything."
2. "I have the power to choose beliefs that align with my values and bring me peace."
3. "Letting go of beliefs that no longer serve me creates space for growth, joy, and authenticity."
I’d love to hear from you. What’s one belief you’ve outgrown or let go of? Share it in the comments. Let’s start a conversation!
