Growing up, I had a unique experience watching my baby sister grow up from afar while I attended college. It wasn’t always easy balancing my academic responsibilities and feeling connected to her life. Often, I found myself missing out on small but meaningful moments—her first words, first steps, and milestones that I had only heard about later. Technology helped bridge the distance; video calls and messages became my lifeline to stay involved in her daily development. However, being physically distant made me realize how time seems to move faster for siblings living apart. It’s a mixed feeling of pride from seeing them grow independently and a longing to be more present. I learned that finding small ways to connect, like sending care packages or planning visits during breaks, helped maintain that bond. For anyone in a similar situation, remember that growing up from afar is a shared journey. It challenges you to cherish the moments you do have and to find creative ways to stay connected despite the miles. College life is demanding, but your sibling’s growth story doesn’t have to be one you miss out on—it can become part of your own personal growth too.
