I personally love using a good quality paper bedding – it's soft, absorbent, and holds tunnels really well. Seeing them create intricate tunnels and chambers beneath the surface is just incredible; it fulfills their instinctual need to hide, feel safe, and even regulate their temperature. This deep bedding setup isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity for a happy hamster! Think of it as their personal underground apartment, complete with hiding spots and storage areas. Beyond bedding, enrichment is key to a stimulating environment. An appropriately sized, clear exercise wheel is non-negotiable for their energy levels (no wire wheels, please, as they can hurt tiny feet!). But don't stop there! I make sure they always have a variety of chew toys, like a textured wooden chew toy, to keep their teeth healthy and prevent boredom. Tunnels made from cardboard tubes, and a cozy wooden hideout, are also big hits. Foraging is another fantastic enrichment tool; I scatter some of his dried food mix around the enclosure instead of just in a food bowl, encouraging them to 'hunt' for their meals.
