One of the main talking points when I bring up mermaid mythology is their penchant for drowning men
🌊Men were typically the ones to pass on mermaid myths as it was considered bad luck to bring a woman aboard a ship.
🐚But men weren’t just wary of mermaids, they were wary of the water itself and what it represents: change, the unknown and the divine feminine. And instead of exploring, it was personified and demonized, or ignored entirely.
🫧The ocean remains a mystery because we can only explore so much of it with our limited technology, the magical abilities of the water within our own bodies remains elusive as well

Their danger was primarily auditory and psychological. Mermaids, on the other hand, typically have the upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish. Their mythology is broader, spanning cultures worldwide, and their intentions can be more varied. While many tales echo the original article's point about their 'penchant for drowning men' – often through seduction or playful trickery leading to tragic outcomes – other stories portray them as benevolent guardians of the sea, healers, or even lovers. The fear surrounding mermaids frequently stemmed from the unknown depths of the ocean and its unpredictable nature, rather than just a magical song. This makes us wonder, as the image suggested, 'Do we really fear mermaids, or do we fear what water represents?' Many ancient cultures, particularly those reliant on the sea for sustenance and travel, imbued water with immense symbolic power.
