This was a no-notes read… except I have MANY notes because I’m obsessed. Grave Matter by Karina Halle just became one of my favorite reads of the year and I’m still thinking about it.
This book had everything I crave: dark gothic romance, horror, sci-fi elements, dark academia, and psychological thriller energy all woven together so seamlessly it never felt overwhelming—just immersive and addictive. It pulled me in immediately and didn’t let go.
Apparently creepy mushroom horror is my new niche because this is my third one recently and now I need more… even though I’m officially freaked out by fungi. This story genuinely unsettled me, gave me chills, and had me questioning everything. I kept trying to figure it out the entire time and still never saw that plot twist coming.
It gave me the same eerie, addictive feeling as Nocticadia and now I’m craving more spooky dark academia with romance threaded through it. The professor/student tension in this? Elite. And Wes Kincaid… sir. I was obsessed from the beginning. The dialogue alone had me hooked, and yes—the mouth on that man deserves its own mention. The romance wasn’t the main focus, but when it showed up, it delivered. Fully devoured.
The mental health representation stood out in the best way. It felt intentional, well-researched, and handled with care, which made everything hit even harder.
I’m so glad I picked this up on a whim because it was the perfect read for this season, and now I’ll absolutely be reading more from this author.
