A day in the life of an AI Product Manager! 👩🏽💻 #fyp #techtok #womeninstem #aiengineer #blackwomenintech
As someone who has spent nearly a decade in tech and has hands-on experience building AI products, I can share some key insights about AI product management. Many people assume you need to be a coding expert or an AI engineer to get started in this field, but that’s not necessarily true. What truly matters is your ability to think like a product manager — understanding the problem you're solving, why it matters, and how to deliver value through technology. One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that AI product managers are not the ones writing code or building the AI models themselves. Instead, your role is to define the product vision, identify user pain points, and decide which features the AI should include to solve real challenges. For example, if you’re designing an AI tool to help people manage their busy schedules and reduce overwhelm, you start by studying where users struggle the most—be it time management, staying consistent, or feeling overloaded. You then translate this understanding into features like personalized daily goal planning, timely reminders, or adaptive schedules that change based on the user's lifestyle. It’s crucial to know enough about AI to grasp how it works at a high level—what data it uses, how it generates recommendations, and how to ensure the product is helpful rather than overwhelming. From my experience building chatbots, showing your thought process clearly is essential, even if you’re not coding the entire product yourself. Documenting the problem, your product solution, user interaction flows, and how you measure success (e.g., increased consistency, reduced user stress) demonstrates strong product thinking. Breaking into AI product management is accessible if you focus on cultivating these skills. Embrace a mindset of curiosity about AI technology combined with a strong user-centered approach. This balance enables you to create innovative products that genuinely make users' lives easier and meet business needs efficiently.
