The verse from 1 Kings 20:28, where the man of God declares, “Because the Arameans have said, ‘The Lord is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys,’ I will hand over all this whole huge army to you. Then you will know that I am the Lord,” is incredibly powerful and offers so much insight into God’s nature. When I first read this, I paused. The idea that people would limit God to certain terrains or situations really struck me. The context from 1 Kings 20 is fascinating: the Arameans, led by King Ben-hadad, had been defeated by Israel’s army in the mountains. Their advisors then suggested that Israel's God must be a ‘god of the hills,’ implying He lacked power in the lowlands or plains. They believed if they fought on the plain, they would surely win because their own gods were better suited for such terrain. This is a common human tendency, isn't it? We often try to put God in a box, defining where and how He can act based on our limited understanding or current circumstances. But what this scripture, 1 Kings 20:28, so beautifully reveals is that God is utterly sovereign and limitless. He isn’t constrained by geography, by our problems, or by our perceived strengths and weaknesses. He is the God of everywhere and *everything*. He is the God of the soaring mountain peaks – those moments of triumph, joy, and clear vision in our lives. He’s there when we feel on top of the world, celebrating successes and experiencing His blessings in abundance. Crucially, He is also the God of the deep, dark valleys. These are the seasons of struggle, doubt, grief, illness, financial hardship, or loneliness. Moments when we feel utterly low, powerless, and perhaps even forgotten. The Arameans underestimated God’s reach and power, and they paid a heavy price. Similarly, when we face a 'valley' in our lives, it's easy to feel like God might not be there, or that this particular challenge is beyond His scope. But 1 Kings 20:28 is a profound reminder: He is just as present, powerful, and loving in the valley as He is on the mountain. For me, this verse has brought immense comfort. It means that whether I'm experiencing a mountaintop high or walking through a difficult valley, God is with me. He doesn't just show up for the good times; He's intimately involved in every part of my journey. He sees, He cares, and He has the power to act, regardless of the 'terrain' I'm currently navigating. This truth encourages me to trust Him completely, knowing that His presence and power are not dependent on my circumstances, but on His unchanging nature as the one true Lord over all.
