... Read moreJohn 1:14 NIV: 'The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.' This isn't just any Bible verse; it's a foundational truth that profoundly shapes our understanding of God and humanity. When I first encountered this verse, perhaps even beautifully presented on a blue-grey background with a peaceful deer silhouette like some inspiring images I’ve seen, it really made me stop and think. What does it truly mean that 'The Word became flesh'? To understand this verse, we first need to grasp the concept of "The Word." In Greek, this is "Logos," a term rich with meaning. It refers to divine reason, the very expression of God's being. Before creation, before anything existed, "The Word" was with God and was God, as articulated earlier in John's Gospel. So, when John 1:14 declares that "The Word became flesh," it's stating something truly revolutionary: the eternal, divine, pre-existent God took on human form. This isn't just a metaphor; it's the Incarnation – God literally becoming a human being, Jesus Christ. For me, this speaks volumes about God's incredible love and desire to connect with us on our level. He didn't just send a message; He became the message. The phrase "made his dwelling among us" is also incredibly significant. The Greek word here, "skenoo," literally means to 'pitch a tent' or 'tabernacle.' This immediately brings to mind the Old Testament tabernacle, where God's presence dwelled among the Israelites. Just as God dwelled in that sacred tent, Jesus, God incarnate, "tabernacled" among us. He moved into our neighborhood, walked our dusty roads, felt our pains, and understood our joys. This isn't a distant, unapproachable deity; it's a God who chose to be intimately present. Reflecting on this makes me feel seen and understood in a way that nothing else can. And what did we see when He dwelt among us? "His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." This glory wasn't always a dazzling light show, though He displayed divine power. It was often seen in His humility, His compassion for the outcast, His unwavering commitment to truth, and His radical grace towards sinners. It was the glory of a God who serves, heals, and loves unconditionally. He is the "one and only Son," uniquely positioned to reveal the Father to us, because He shares the very essence of God. "Full of grace and truth" – these two qualities define Jesus' character and mission. His grace is God's undeserved favor, His boundless compassion and forgiveness extended to us even when we don't deserve it. His truth is the ultimate reality, the revelation of God's character and plan for humanity. Jesus didn't just speak truth; He embodied it. He didn't just offer grace; He was grace personified. In a world often lacking genuine grace and obscured by falsehoods, this aspect of Jesus is profoundly comforting and guiding. For me, understanding John 1:14 isn't just about theology; it's about a living, breathing relationship. It means that God isn't far off; He came near. He understands our human experience because He lived it. It invites us to welcome His presence into our own lives, and to reflect His grace and truth in our interactions with others. This verse reminds me that true glory is found in humble service, profound love, and unwavering commitment to what is right and good. It's a call to embrace the divine presence that still seeks to dwell within and among us.
