Before and After Renter-Friendly Bathroom Makeover
This was a quick mini project I wanted to complete before Christmas. After 4 years living in this rental, I decided it was time to update the look of our master bathroom.
This creamy color was all over the apartment, and I’ve been slowly changing it to white, one area at a time. For this bathroom, I wanted to create something different and moody, so I chose a dark color.
Paint:
Since it’s a rental, I used the Limewash technique but with acrylic paint. I’ve done this in other areas of the apartment, and it has turned out really well. What I do is I take two paint colors with a brush and blend them using a crisscross technique. This is a great solution for renters who want the expensive Limewash look without the cost.
Paint color used:
-Toffee crunch
-black
-Berry Brown
-Alpine frost
Accessories:
I changed the old handles a couple of years ago for this black ones and I still love them. They make the doors and the space look more modern.
For now, I’m keeping this sconce, but my plan is to replace it. The original glass shades were outdated, so we removed them, which made the fixture look much better. However, as I mentioned, I’d like to upgrade it eventually.
Storage:
I added some much needed storage! I replaced the old plastic hamper with a modern one and added cabinet organizers to keep everything in place.

Beyond paint and smart storage like my new modern white hamper and cabinet organizers, there are so many ways to make your space truly yours without losing your security deposit. For instance, flooring can be a huge eyesore. If you're stuck with outdated linoleum or tiles, consider peel-and-stick vinyl tiles. I've seen friends use these to cover up ugly floors in just an afternoon, and they come in so many stylish patterns – from faux wood to geometric designs. They're surprisingly durable and easy to remove when you move out, leaving no sticky residue.
Another area often overlooked is lighting. While I'm still planning to upgrade my sconce, a quick fix for a dingy fixture is to simply replace the lightbulbs with warmer or cooler LED options to change the ambiance. For those without overhead lighting, stick-on, battery-operated puck lights can brighten up dark corners or even illuminate a shower area. And don't forget the power of a stylish shower curtain! It's one of the largest visual elements in a bathroom, and swapping out a basic one for a patterned or textured curtain can instantly elevate the entire feel, creating a cohesive look with your new dark, moody walls.
Now, let's talk about the renter-friendly bathroom mirror. Many rentals come with those basic, frameless, glued-on mirrors that scream 'builder-grade.' My original setup with the light wood vanity and the old mirror was definitely lacking. If you can't remove it, you can easily upgrade it. I've seen fantastic DIY mirror frames that simply attach to the existing mirror with adhesive strips. You can buy kits or even make your own from trim pieces painted to match your new aesthetic. Or, if you're like me and your mirror area felt a bit neglected after the paint job, adding some greenery – like the plant I put on my countertop – or some chic floating shelves above or beside it can draw the eye away from the less-than-ideal mirror itself, making the whole area feel more intentional and less like a cluttered countertop of the past.
For those lucky enough to replace their mirror, look for lightweight options that can be hung with strong adhesive hooks or even leaning against the wall if space allows. Before making any changes, always double-check your lease agreement. Taking "before" photos is also a lifesaver, just in case you ever need to prove the original condition. Focusing on reversible changes and investing in quality, removable items ensures you get to enjoy a beautiful space while respecting your lease. It's all about making your rental feel like home, one clever DIY project at a time!
