Count Orlok
Okay, fellow horror fans! If you’ve ever wanted to embody the chilling presence of Count Orlok, you’re in for a treat. I've spent some time perfecting this look, and I'm so excited to share my step-by-step process with you. It’s all about those iconic details that make him so unforgettable! First up, let's talk about the Count Orlok makeup. This is where the magic really happens to achieve that gaunt, otherworldly vampire look. My goal was always to mimic that sickly, almost cadaverous pallor. I started with a very light, almost white foundation or a stage makeup stick in a pale shade, making sure to blend it down my neck and even onto my hands for consistency. The key is to avoid any warmth! Then, for those deeply sunken eyes, I used a dark grey or even a touch of purple eyeshadow blended heavily around my eye sockets, extending it slightly to create an aged, hollow effect. Think less 'smoky eye' and more 'recently unearthed.' I also used a little contouring powder under my cheekbones and along my jawline to emphasize the gauntness. Don't forget those thin, almost non-existent eyebrows – I usually cover mine with a glue stick and then use a pale foundation over them, or just draw on a faint, high arch with a brow pencil if I want to keep some definition. And for his lips? Just a touch of the same pale foundation to make them disappear into my skin. Next, the Count Orlok outfit! His attire is deceptively simple but absolutely crucial for that eerie silhouette. The classic look is a dark, heavy coat or cloak with a high, often stiff collar. I found a vintage black wool coat that had a great, imposing shape, and then I added a stiff interfacing to the collar to make it stand up dramatically. Underneath, a dark, period-appropriate suit or waistcoat with trousers works best. Think late 19th or early 20th century, very formal but plain. I opted for a simple black vest over a dark shirt – no frills, no flashy ties. The key here is the silhouette: long, lean, and somewhat oppressive. The fabric should look heavy and a bit worn, not brand new. Sometimes I'll drape a long, dark scarf around the neck for added mystery and warmth, especially if I'm going to be out and about. Now, for those iconic Count Orlok hands. They're truly one of his most distinctive features! Those long, skeletal fingers with sharp, almost claw-like nails are essential. If you can get your hands on some good prosthetics, that's amazing, but I usually create mine with a bit of DIY magic. I use liquid latex and tissue paper to build up the length of my fingers, especially the tips, and then paint them with the same pale foundation as my face. For the nails, I sculpt them out of craft foam or even thick cardstock, shape them into points, paint them a dirty off-white or light grey, and then glue them securely to my own nails. To further emphasize the gauntness, I use a thin brush and some dark grey eyeshadow to draw in veins and shadows on the back of my hands, making them look bony and aged. It really makes a difference! Finally, the Orlok mustache – or lack thereof! This is subtle, but important. He doesn't have a big, bushy 'stache like some other vampires. Instead, it's a very thin, almost pencil-line mustache. I achieve this by using a fine-tipped black eyeliner pencil. I draw a very delicate line just above my upper lip, making sure it’s straight and not too thick. The goal is a faint, almost wispy line that adds to his unique facial structure without being distracting. It’s amazing how such a small detail can complete the whole look. Putting it all together, you get that truly terrifying and iconic Count Orlok. It's a look that always gets a reaction, and it's so rewarding to see it come to life. Give it a try for your next costume event – you won't regret it!
