Let’s talk about bride price in Africans culture

As African woman who have married outside of the cultural. I didn’t want my husband to pay the bridal price I don’t believe in it, when I told my mother that I didn’t want my husband to pay the bridal price she seemed disappointed saying that I should follow the tradition,

Well eventually he paid the bridal price. When they pay bridal price is a good way to thanking the bride parents for raising the daughter. That’s what I have heard #africanwedding

My sister she’s getting married and she don’t want her man to pay the bridal price and I agree with her because a lot of African men want to get married but they can’t because they have to pay $15 -20 thousands dollars. How will they live after marriage not only that when a man is get married he have to pay everything when I say everything I mean he have to pay for the venue and food including bridal price which it can cost around $50 to 70 thousands dollars.

What do you guys think!!

I think it’s just fair for the Africans men what if they don’t have man is that mean they will never get married

... Read moreThe bride price, or dowry, is a longstanding tradition in many African communities, symbolizing respect and appreciation towards the bride's family. However, this practice often raises substantial financial burdens, with costs typically ranging from $15,000 to over $70,000. Many young African men express concerns about the financial implications, questioning if such expectations hinder marriage prospects. In recent times, there has been a growing discourse on whether the bride price should be reevaluated or adjusted based on contemporary values. Supporters of tradition argue it reinforces family dignity, while critics note that it can create obstacles for couples wishing to marry. Furthermore, it is essential to consider alternative practices that focus on mutual respect and collaboration rather than financial exchange. Cultural exchanges and discussions about marriage practices can lead to insightful changes in communities, allowing for a blend of tradition and modernity. Couples can find common ground by openly discussing their views on bride price and exploring options that honor their values without creating undue financial strain. As society evolves, so too should our understanding and implementation of cultural practices.

I think the bridal price (was/is) a great tradition however, our parents have become extra greedy over the last 10 or so years and instead see the bridal price as a means to show off to other parents. To make matter worse, your new inlaws will more than likely to maltreat you because they feel entitled to you and your labor because essentially, they paid for you and in full. This maltreat I have seen time and time again and whats worse, they'll tell you its how it is and hide their abuse under the "culture, tradition." They're literally stealing from their children at best! Furthermore, no one should have a business in knowing how much your spouse paid. Realistically and collectively, there should be an agreed-upon standard amount that a man must pay solely based on what he earns. Whether it be $5k, $8k or even $10k. If the guy feels that he wants to pay more than this, that's his choice. This isn't to job shame anyone but not everyone is a nurse, engineer, or whatever else brings the most money. And not everyone is going to marry 😒 man kf these groups who brings such income. It's not realistic to charge someone $25 to $30k in dowry and they work a dead-end minimum wage job. That is asinine. At the very least, encourange your sons to go school & go after such majors if you desperately want to upgcharge them in bridal price. Otherwise, it dont make any sense. During my time, some woman went for $30k (I can't 100% confirm this) but this is what was being said. What was the reason for this? And then after it was announced, every parent alike wanted this price tag kn their daughter? Seriously what is going on? Biblically, yes your supposed to pay a bridal price but why so much?🥺🥺
